National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October 2008

National Mammography Day : October 17, 2008

For more than 20 years, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) has educated women about early breast cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment. This year, NBCAM is again reaching out to women with several key messages, most notably, the importance of early detection through annual mammography screening for women over 40. Mammography screenings are a woman's best chance for detecting breast cancer early. When coupled with new treatment options, mammography screenings can significantly improve a woman's chances of survival.

The third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day, first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993. On this day, or throughout the month, women are encouraged to make a mammography appointment. In 2008, National Mammography Day will be celebrated on October 17.

Below is a partial list of outstanding speakers from Capitol City Speakers Bureau who address Breast Cancer awareness and other topics relevant to Women and Women's Health:

Meredith Baxter : In film, television and on stage, Meredith Baxter is noted for her accessible portrayals of intelligent, independent women who struggle with the challenges before them. A survivor of breast cancer, she created the Meredith Baxter Foundation for Breast Cancer Research, which provides funds for breast cancer prevention and research, including the funding of free mammograms for low-income women.
Ann Jillian : Good Housekeeping Magazine named Ann Jillian one of the most admired women of the world. Her prowess extends from the world's concert halls, to feature films and the Broadway stage. Ann has starred in over 25 TV movies and made hundreds of other TV appearances. Her television movie, The Ann Jillian Story, which recounted her victory over breast cancer, was the #1 film of the TV season; but more importantly, it delivered Ann's message about the hopeful side of breast cancer to its millions of viewers.
Naomi Judd : Although she would modestly insist otherwise, there has never been anything simple or commonplace about Naomi Judd. Diagnosed in 1990 with a potentially life-threatening liver disease, Naomi faced the tragedy with trademark strength and optimism. Now she is a highly sought-after insprirational and motivational speaker who translates faith and values, medical knowledge, humor, common sense and belief in the mind-body-spirit connection into a powerful and unforgettable message.
Rebecca Lobo : Rebecca Lobo fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a professional basketball player by signing with the New York Liberty of the WNBA. With her mother, Ruthan, she co-authored The Home Team, an autobiographical account of Rebecca's career and her mother's successful battle against breast cancer, in 1996. Rebecca is a dedicated supporter of causes and organizations devoted to cancer research and support.
Mary LoVerde : A dynamic international speaker, consultant and author, Mary LoVerde is President of Life Balance, Inc., a company devoted to spreading the message of finding balance through connection. A contributor to the best-selling inspirational collections, Chocolate for a Woman's Soul and Chocolate for a Woman's Heart, Mary has touched many readers with her stories. She presents a wealth of uplifting insights and innovative ideas for taking small steps in the right direction for a less stressful, more satisfying life.
Betty Rollin : Betty Rollin is the author of the landmark best-seller, First You Cry, a moving memoir about her ordeal with breast cancer and mastectomy. In 2000, the book was re-published in honor of Betty's 25th "cancer anniversary." Betty, who gives what she calls "cheery cancer talks," is a speaker who brings intelligence, inspiration and humor to a subject that is on all women's minds.
Marcia Wallace : Marcia Wallace, who currently gives voice to Mrs. Krabappel, Springfield's Elementary's beleaguered teacher on The Simpsons, successfully battled breast cancer in 1985. She frequently lectures on the emotional and clinical tribulations of fighting breast cancer, promoting early detection and low-cost mammography. She also speaks on the importance of humor and laughter when facing life's challenges. Marcia recently released her first book entitled, "Don’t Look Back, We’re Not Going That Way."
